Hey everyone, I’m Matt! 👋

Welcome to this fun experiment I’m starting called The Daily Ship! This is going to be a short email but I wanted to layout my thought process of starting this project.

There are 2 main intentions with starting this.

  1. I want to document my early learning in the dev space. Although I’ve built a couple fun full-stack projects, I want to start churning these out more frequently! From hackathon projects, chrome extensions, to random morning ideas. This will be the equivalent of my ‘developer journal.’

  2. I want to launch more publicly, and get early feedback loops. Since I’ll be sharing what I learn, but also any blockers it allows fellow readers to either comment better options (ex: better ways to format code, or packages to use), or provide more efficient ways to solve a problem.

As an extra incentive, here are two bonus reasons for starting this.

  1. It’s easy to repurpose content for Twitter. A lot of my learning can eventually become more established and thought out tweets.

  2. Writing is one of the best ways to full understand a topic. By typing out what I learned each day I’ll better retain my learning & failures from the day. I also do ‘week sprints’ on topics I wanna learn, and now I can make my notes more public for others to learn

Common Questions

Q: Are you seriously going to do this EVERYDAY??
A: the plan is release a newsletter out every day for the foreseeable future. Even if it’s a newsletter that says “I didn’t ship anything out today.” I’m sure there is going to be days where nothing gets shipped, in which case I might experiment for something every 2 days or weekly. But for now I like the idea of shipping something (anything) on a daily basis.

Q: Are you planning on monetizing this? What’s your long-term plan?
A: nope! I wanted this to be a very personal newsletter that’s received by a couple really close friends (~100 people on this newsletter). Anyone who knows about this newsletter is simply because I sent it them personally. Unlike my monthly updates from my other newsletter Compound Advantage (~2,000 people on that newsletter).

Q: Any other newsletters you’re going to be making?

A: I think if this process goes well, I’ll likely do this for other areas including fitness & health.

In the meantime, follow me on Twitter.

Matt
